Bill Gates has proposed and funded a geoengineering experiment to determine whether blotting out the Sun with aerosols could reverse global warming. This experiment was undertaken by Sweden’s space agency. But now they have called off this project as they are facing a great opposition from the environmental activists.

The experiment was named as the Stratospheric Controlled Perturbation Experiment, or SCoPEx by researchers at Harvard University.
According to this experiment, a cloud of calcium carbonate was to be released in the atmosphere from a high-altitude balloon in a controlled way. And, then to study its impact on the sunlight reaching the earth.
This project soon became highly controversial and the Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) had to call it off. The test flight that was scheduled in June has been terminated.
“The scientific community is divided regarding geoengineering, including any related technology tests such as the planned technical balloon test flight from Esrange this summer,” the SSC said in a statement.

“SSC has had dialogues this spring with both leading experts on geoengineering and with other stakeholders, as well as with the SCoPEx Advisory Board.“
“As a result of these dialogues and in agreement with Harvard, SSC has decided not to conduct the technical test flight planned for this summer.”
The flight was planned over the Arctic town of Kiruna. It would have helped to test the balloon’s system that was required for the progress of the research.
However, owing to the strong opposition by local activists, it had to be stopped. The Saami Council has warned in a letter (read below) that the SCoPEx experiment could have “catastrophic consequences.”
The SCoPEx’s website mentions that the experiment would pose “no significant hazard to people or the environment” and the research team is planning to release only a small amount of particles into the air.
However, the Saami Council has opposed solar geoengineering in concept, saying it “essentially attempts to mimic volcanic eruptions by continuously spewing the sky with sun-dimming particles.”
The activist groups also argued that SCoPEx could distract from the goal of reducing carbon emissions and have “irreversible sociopolitical effects that could compromise the world’s necessary efforts to achieve zero-carbon societies.”
The experiment has received backing from Harvard’s Solar Geoengineering Research Program, and the billionaire climate crusader Bill Gates is named on their website as one among its private donors.
As per The Guardian, Bill Gates has earlier donated $4.6 million to David Keith of Harvard, separately.
David Keith received this donation for his Fund for Innovative Climate and Energy Research (FICER). FICER was founded in 2007 and it also funds research into solar geoengineering.
David Keith is currently working as a lead researcher on SCoPEx.
When asked at a 2010 TED talk about what emergency measures we can implement to fight climate change, Gates said:
“There is a line of research on what’s called geoengineering, which are various techniques that would delay the heating to buy us 20 or 30 years to get our act together.”
“Now that’s just an insurance policy, you hope that you don’t need to do that,” he said, adding that the idea might be “kept in the back pocket.”
Keith, a professor of applied physics at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, told Reuters that it was a great setback for him when the SSC decided to call off the experiment.
He further said, if he won’t get any support from Europe, then the project could move to the US.
The latest report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine called on the government to devote between $100 million and $200 million to solar geoengineering projects, including technology to dim out the Sun, over the next five years.Sweden-Cancels-Bill-Gates-Geoengineering-Project-To-Block-The-Sun-Due-To-Catastrophic-Consequences
