Will India’s growing gaming market create more jobs?

Until the COVID-19 pandemic struck, many Indian parents frowned against video gaming for their kids. A lot had warned the children to stay away from video games. However, when the Karnataka High Court overturned the amendment to the Karnataka Police Act, 2021, it brought significant relief to India’s gaming industry which is valued at around $930 million.

Roland Landers, the Chief Executive of All India Gaming Federation (AIGF) applauded the Karnataka High Court for making the right decision. “We look forward to working with the government and stakeholders to develop a clear regulatory framework that will enable legitimate gaming companies to operate in the state with safeguards while eradicating illegal gambling apps from the state,” he said.

The COVID-19 pandemic led to numerous restrictions and lockdowns which resulted in a change in the landscape of the Indian gaming industry, which is one of the top performers in the global market as of today.

The Indian gaming industry is now perceived as one of the important pillars of the nation’s economy. This fast-growing industry has the potential to create thousands of jobs in the nation. In the coming years, we look forward to seeing many gaming startups employ hundreds of Indians.

Why the gaming industry continues to grow large

The only reason more jobs are being expected is the speed of the gaming industry’s growth. Without growth, there cannot be more jobs. According to multiple reports, most gamers in India make use of their mobile devices to play. Around 85 percent of Indian gamers use mobile, 11 percent use PC, and just 4 percent use tablets for gaming.

Many international organizations also confirmed the increase in the availability of smartphones as a driver of growth in the Indian gaming industry. For instance, the World Economic Forum mentioned that mobile is the primary vehicle for the gaming industry in India, thanks to increased access to affordable smartphones which has been growing at the 15 percent year on year (YOY) within the last five years.

Furthermore, internet penetration accompanied by low data tariffs has further enhanced the growth. The availability of high-speed 4G also makes online games work smoothly on devices. It doesn’t matter if you want to play Teen Patti with real money or the regular video games for fun, you’ll enjoy these games without hassles online.

According to a survey by an Adtech firm, nearly 45 percent of mobile users in India began to play games on their smartphones during the pandemic. Another report from KPMG stated that the number of Indian online gamers increase from around 250 million in 2018 to around 400 million in 2020. The value of the gaming industry is expected to reach $3.9 billion by 2025.

Little wonder Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman while revealing the budget for the Union this year introduced a new task force with the responsibility of finding methods to increase domestic capacity as well as build enough to meet global demand in the animation, visual effects, gaming, and comics (AVGC) sector.

Job opportunities currently available in the Indian gaming industry

Right now, there are already many jobs that Indians can take in the gaming industry. What’s left is for more positions to be opened at gaming studios and companies. Here are three of the popular jobs

  • Game Designer: As the industry grows, many companies will need creative people to help them come up with more game ideas. The designer creates the main concept of the game and works with other departments such as development and programming to develop the game.
  • Game developer: After the main concept is gotten, the developer is charged with the task of bringing it to life. You need to have a qualification in game programming or development to get such jobs.
  • Game tester: Before the game is released to the public, it must be checked by a tester who needs to verify the quality, identify bugs, and suggest improvements to the developer.

Conclusion

There are so many other jobs than we have mentioned. These include both those involved in the creation of the games and those tasked with other activities of the company. Examples are game animator and visual artists, sound engineers, interpreters and translators, market analysts, customer service reps, and many others. As the industry grows larger, we will see more openings for these jobs. Hence, prepare yourself and start looking for opportunities if you’re interested.
