The director of the UN’s Human Rights Office in New York, Craig Mokhiber, has resigned, saying that the UN has surrendered to Israel and the US.
Craig Mokhiber, the director of the UN’s Human Rights Office (OHCHR) in New York, has resigned from his position, blaming the organization’s inadequate handling of the Israel-Palestine conflict.
The senior official asserted that the “European, ethno-nationalist, settler colonial project in Palestine has entered its final phase” and that the UN had “surrendered to the power of the US” in place of completing its job.
Mokhiber wrote to the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights Volker Turk, stating, “Once again, we are seeing a genocide unfolding before our eyes, and the Organization that we serve appears powerless to stop it.” The letter was published on Tuesday.
The US is orchestrating the Israel-Palestine War by fully supporting the Israel army’s armed offensive against Palestinians and concealing the genocide carried out by its right-wing Israeli ally in Gaza.

The official acknowledged that the term “genocide” “has often been subject to political abuse,” but nonetheless characterized the current Israeli assault in the Gaza Strip as such.
This is a text-book case of genocide. The European, ethno-nationalist, settler colonial project in Palestine has entered its final phase, toward the expedited destruction of the last remnants of indigenous Palestinian life in Palestine.
In addition to simply failing to uphold their international obligations, the governments of the US, the UK, and “much of Europe are wholly complicit in the horrific assault,” according to Mokhiber, who added that they “actively arm the assault, provide economic and intelligence support, and give political and diplomatic cover for Israel’s atrocities.” He emphasized that the “cover” is further strengthened by “Western corporate media, increasingly captured and state-adjacent,” which has been “broadcasting propaganda for war and advocacy of national, racial, or religious hatred, and continuously dehumanizing Palestinians to facilitate the genocide.”
Mokhiber thinks that throughout time, the UN has lost its “principles” and “authority,” which were based on the body’s “integrity,” such as during South Africa’s apartheid. Mokhiber pointed out that the UN has a history of failing to prevent genocides, citing the genocides in Rwanda and Bosnia, the Yazidi genocide carried out by the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), and the Rohingya genocide in Myanmar as examples.
“In recent decades, key parts of the UN have surrendered to the power of the US and to the fear of the Israel Lobby, to abandon these principles, and to retreat from international law itself. We have lost a lot in this abandonment, not least our own global credibility. But the Palestinian people have sustained the biggest losses as a result of our failures,” he stated.
He recommended that in order to address the issue, the UN “learn from the principled stance taken in cities around the world in recent days as masses of people stand up against the genocide, even at the risk of beatings and arrest.” Aside from that, he urged the organization to abandon the “illusory two-state solution” and support the establishment of a “single, democratic, secular state in all of historic Palestine,” which would guarantee Israel’s “dismantling” as a “deeply racist, settler-colonial project,” according to the source.
