A top diplomat from Russia said that US did not treat other powerful countries like Russia as equals and that the Ukraine war is meant to stop US world domination.
In a Rossiya 24 TV interview with foreign minister Sergey Lavrov, Russia exposed its broad geostrategic goals with its Ukraine operation in relation to the US and NATO.
Lavrov emphasised that, in the end, Russia’s invasion, which began on February 24, has brought an end to the US-dominated order, forcing Washington to abandon its unipolar worldview. “Our special military operation is meant to put an end to the unabashed expansion [of NATO] and the unabashed drive towards full domination by the US and its Western subjects on the world stage,” Lavrov said in the interview, which aired Monday.
“This domination is built on gross violations of international law and some rules,” he continued, “which they are now hyping so much and which they make up on a case-by-case basis.”
He claimed that in the lead-up to the invasion of Ukraine, the US did not treat other powerful countries as “equals,” but rather ignored Russia’s and others’ legitimate security concerns, and that as a result, Moscow was unwilling to bend to its will.
Lavrov also chastised Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy leader, over a recent statement made while meeting with Volodomyr Zelensy. “This war will be won on the battlefield,” Borrell remarked. According to the statement, the West is pressuring Ukrainians to reject the idea of a negotiated settlement and ceasefire.
Despite recent Zelensky pronouncements promising neutrality on NATO membership, negotiations have made little headway, with each session often devolving into accusations and counter-accusations.
The Saturday statement was branded “outrageous” by Lavrov, who pointed out that Borrell’s viewpoint is intended to represent EU diplomacy:
“When a diplomatic chief … says a certain conflict can only be resolved through military action… Well, it must be something personal. He either misspoke or spoke without thinking, making a statement that nobody asked him to make. But it’s an outrageous remark,” Lavrov said.
Due to the influence of Washington, which is using the conflict to fuel a standoff with Russia, the top Russian diplomat went on to explain that he believes a more militaristic aggressive stance has taken root among EU officials. This will stifle progress in direct cease-fire talks between Ukraine and Russia…
Lavrov went on to say that Moscow is still interested in peace talks. Intriguingly, his remarks come as Zelensky himself is blasting NATO as “weak” for long pressuring Ukraine to stand up to Russia but now refusing to “close the sky” or establish a no-fly zone.
