This week, the Ansar Allah organization in Yemen took control of an Israeli-owned cargo ship in the Red Sea, opening a new “front” in Israel’s conflict with Gaza. Earlier, Brigadier General Yahya Saree had declared that Israeli-owned or operated warships as well as ships flying the national flag would be attacked by Yemenis. Saree demanded that all states remove their individuals who were employed as ship crew members.

“Avoid shipping on or handling these vessels. Inform your ships to stay away from these ships,” Saree said.

The vessel’s detention was described as a “global scale incident” by the Israeli Defence Ministry. Meanwhile, Iran was held responsible for the incident by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.

It turned revealed that Israeli billionaire Rami Ungar was one of the owners of the cargo ship Galaxy Leader, which had 25 crew members from Mexico, the Philippines, the Philippines, and Bulgaria on board.

Who is Rami Ungar?

One of the richest Israelis, Abraham “Rami” Ungar is the chairman of Ray Shipping and a successful businessman with significant holdings in real estate and auto imports. Ungar has been recognized by the Korean government with an award for his efforts to promote automobile commerce between Seoul and Israel.

In 1947, Rami was born in north Tel Aviv. He was educated in the United Kingdom and comes from a highly rich family. After serving in the Signal Corps of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), he attended Oxford University to study law. He graduated from the Tel Aviv University Faculty of Law in 1971, and the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy in Bulgaria awarded him an honorary doctorate degree (Doctor Honoris Causa) in 2014.

Ungar established a small business in the late 1960s that dealt with the importation of air conditioning equipment for vans and trailers. Later on, he started importing Autobianchi and later Lancia vehicles into Israel as the first importer. Ungar established Ungar Holdings LTD in 1972. It is a well-known Israeli enterprise that builds homes and offices and rents out airplanes.

Car and bulk carriers are in the dozens at Ray Shipping LTD, his business. The company employs over 1,000 Bulgarian officers and engineers, 80 percent of whom are Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy graduates.

Influential friends and ties with the Mossad

With an estimated net worth of $2 billion, Rami Ungar was included among the top 30 richest individuals in Israel in 2019. The businessman had close connections to Israeli leaders, according to Haaretz. A scandal involving former President Ezer Weizman, who resigned in July 2000 due to accusations of corruption, was also discussed. Weizman allegedly got $27,000 from Ungar in the middle of the 1980s.

Ungar is reportedly close friends with Yoav Gallant, Israel’s current defense minister. In July 2018, the businessman purchased tickets for him to attend the FIFA World Cup final.

The Jerusalem Post has reported that the Israeli ship Galaxy Leader has been hijacked by Iran-backed Houthi terrorists.

Ungar is connected to Yossi Cohen, the former head of the Mossad spy organization, through another scandal. The businessman from Israel contributed 1.1 million shekels, or $341,000., towards the building of a synagogue in front of Cohen’s residence. Cohen received the gift straight from the source. It was soon after revealed that Cohen had assisted Ungar in resolving a disagreement with Israeli businessman Michael Levy on the latter’s right to market South Korean automaker Kia in Israel.

Rami Ungar’s connection to the Mossad extends beyond devious plots. For instance, in 2014, the New York Times published a widely discussed article regarding the businessman and the anti-Iranian advocacy group United Against Nuclear Iran. Serving as a go-between, Ungar approached businesses that collaborated with Iran and convinced them to cut off commerce with Tehran.

On the other hand, others believe that Ungar’s primary responsibility was to hire the executives of the Iranian-affiliated businesses. It is implied that Ungar operated as an intelligence operative for the Mossad. Since the Iranians trust these enterprises, the CIA believes they are worth their weight in gold since Israel can utilize this confidence for spying and sabotage.

This is but a tiny sample of the activities that the Israeli billionaire either directly or indirectly oversaw. However, this is sufficient to comprehend why the Houthis of Yemen took control of his ship in the Red Sea.
