Prikspijt, translated into English as “vaccine regret,” was voted the newest Dutch Word of the Year in the dictionary competition. The word is defined as “a feeling of regret someone has about having been vaccinated against any infectious disease.”
The dictionary editor who ran the Twitter campaign stated, Prikspijt, “mirrors polarization of society around the vaccine and booster shot.”
Prikspijt was chosen from amongst 15 words in the Dikke Van Dale Dictionary with a score of 82.2%.
The two biggest rivals, woonprotest, a word that refers to protests against the Dutch housing market, and wappiegeluid, which is a derogatory term often used to refer to the conspiracy theorists, received 3.7 percent and 3.6 percent of the vote, respectively.
A rough estimate of 49,000 people participated in the voting, which was in 2020, a mere 12,000.

Van Dale editor Ton den Boon told the NOS Radio 1 Journaal, that the word was chosen after a Twitter campaign “that was done by people who do not want to get vaccinated.”

On Tuesday, several interviews were conducted by NOS Radio 1 Journaal on the streets so as to see if the public were using the word, but they found that people were yet to use it.

Most respondents believed that people who were hospitalized for avoiding the vaccines would end up having to repent. The Dutch Minister of Health Hugo de Jonge made a similar statement on Twitter, “If you are in the ICU because you have not gotten a shot, only then do you have prikregret.”
