American doctors volunteering in Gaza are revealing shocking and disturbing details that challenge Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s claim of having the “most moral army in the world.” Dr. Mark Perlmutter and other surgeons have reported seeing a staggering number of children with precision rifle wounds, including toddlers, leading them to believe that these injuries are deliberate rather than accidental. The doctors, who have extensive experience in disaster zones, describe Gaza’s civilian casualties as some of the worst they have ever encountered, raising serious questions about the true nature of Israel’s military conduct.

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, has referred to Israel as the “most moral army in the world,” but a large number of gravely concerning injuries observed by American physicians serving as volunteers in Gaza are challenging that assertion.

Dr. Mark Perlmutter, an American surgeon with extensive experience working in disaster areas, is one of the many people who have been astounded by the destruction of civilian areas in Gaza lately. He is particularly struck by the large number of injuries on children, even toddlers, that seem to have been caused by precise rifle fire.

“All of the disasters I’ve seen, combined – 40 mission trips, 30 years, Ground Zero, earthquakes, all of that combined – doesn’t equal the level of carnage that I saw against civilians in just my first week in Gaza,” Dr. Mark Perlmutter, an orthopedic surgeon and vice president of the International College of Surgeons, told CBS’s Sunday Morning. 

The thing that most surprised him was realizing that youngsters made up the vast majority of the patients he and his team saw:

“I’ve never seen that before. I’ve seen more incinerated children than I’ve ever seen in my entire life, combined. I’ve seen more shredded children in just the first week … missing body parts, being crushed by buildings, the greatest majority, or bomb explosions, the next greatest majority.” 

Perlumutter, a Jew who grew up in New Jersey and who now lives in North Carolina, was particularly horrified with what he attributed to accurate rifle fire directed at youngsters, some of whom were “shot twice.”

“I have two children that I have photographs of that were shot so perfectly in the chest, I couldn’t put my stethoscope over their heart more accurately, and directly on the side of the head, in the same child. No toddler gets shot twice by mistake by the ‘world’s best sniper.’ And they’re dead-center shots.“

His description of the occurrence was validated to CBS News by more than 20 other doctors who’d lately visited Gaza. Due to his difficulty understanding what he was seeing, an American physician “didn’t believe that this many children could be admitted to a single hospital with gunshot wounds to the head,” prompting him to double-check using CT scans.

In just two weeks, an anesthesiologist in Virginia reported seeing roughly thirty children with solitary gunshot wounds. A Chicago doctor who saw a lot of gunfire described the horrifying conclusion he came to when he noticed a pattern on the treatment tables in front of him:

“I thought these kids were in the wrong place at the wrong time, like sadly, some of the kids we treat in Chicago. But after the third or fourth time, I realized it was intentional; bullets were being put in these kids on purpose.”

An Israeli Defense Forces spokeswoman informed CBS News that “the IDF has never, and will never, deliberately target children,” while cautioning that “remaining in an active combat zone has inherent risks.” When he addressed the US Congress on Wednesday, Netanyahu said:

“For Israel, every civilian death is a tragedy. For Hamas, it’s a strategy. They actually want Palestinian civilians to die, so that Israel will be smeared in the international media and be pressured to end the war before it’s won.” 

That assertion doesn’t align with the observations made by the volunteer American doctors. The stream of child headshot patients almost always arrived with one of two explanations from their families, according to Perlmutter and Dr. Feroze Sidhwa, writing at Politico: “[They said] the children were playing inside when they were shot by Israeli forces, or they were playing in the street when they were shot by Israeli forces.”

Which assertions, then, should Congress believe more? Dozens of American humanitarian doctors willing to give their time or a prime minister who has already sold them some of the biggest lies they’ve ever believed?
