In light of ongoing conflict, Ukraine dropped 17 places, to 153 out of 163 in the list of peaceful nations. Lets take a look at the full list of the most peaceful countries in the world.
The Institute for Economics and Peace’s 2022 Global Peace Index (read below) reveals that, for the eleventh time in the previous 14 years, the world has become less peaceful. It uses 163 autonomous states and territories, representing 99.7% of the world’s population, to assess the levels of peace using 23 qualitative and quantitative measures.
This time, the peace has worsened in 71 countries while things have improved in 90, as Statista’s Katharina Buchholz explains below.
Iceland, which has maintained the top spot since 2008, was once more the world’s most peaceful nation in 2022. New Zealand, Ireland, Denmark, Austria, and Portugal are grouped together at the top of the index with it. In comparison, the United States was only able to place 129th. Yemen and Syria were included before Afghanistan at the very bottom of the ranking.
Ukraine dropped 17 places, to 153 out of 163, as a result of the ongoing crisis there. But since the crisis in Eastern Ukraine that preceded the Russian intervention had already been assessed poorly, other nations’ situations deteriorated even worse.
Eswatini, Kazakhstan, Guinea, and Kyrgyzstan were the nations with the largest drops in the index in 2022 as compared to a year earlier.
