Russia vetoed a Western resolution condemning its annexation of four disputed Ukrainian areas following contentious referendums on Friday, and although this was predictable, China, India, Brazil, and Gabon also abstaining came as a surprise, reports The Business Standard.
Russia vetoed the resolution after the US and Ukraine co-sponsored it, just hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow will take over parts of Ukraine taken during the conflict through referendums arranged by the Kremlin.
“This is exactly what the Security Council was made to do. Defend sovereignty, protect territorial integrity, promote peace and security,” said US ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, adding “The United Nations was built on an idea that never again would one country be allowed to take another’s territory by force.”
The attempt to condemn a permanent member of the Security Council, according to the Russian envoy Vassily Nebenzia, was unprecedented.

“Do you seriously expect Russia to consider and support such a draft? And if not, then it turns out that you are intentionally pushing us to use the right of the veto in order to then wax lyrical about the fact that Russia abuses this right,” he said.
Putin is correct – – we (USA) are wrong . The ethnic Russians of Donbass / Eastern Ukraine voted ‘w their feet’ , in this case an actual ballot to escape the decades of racism / abuse at the hands of their fellow Ukrainian overlords . It is justice – it is relief and it is welcomed by all , excepting the Deep State that is . ……. …. shalom to all
I agree with @al jenkins. Ukraine has been an anomaly for a very long time. The Istanbul agreement that was vetoed by BoJo the Clown was at least an honest attempt to resolve the situation. My late dear wife was Ukrainian, a Ukrainian speaker, who admired President Putin. She was even moved to say she was Russian. I suspect the problem is that present day geopolitics has suffocated the historical truth, so we are now set on the road to a Third World War as neither party will back down.
