FBI Director Christopher Wray, in a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing, warned of Hamas attacks in the US.
Congress has been informed by FBI Director Christopher Wray that he believes there is a greater chance of terrorist plots on US soil being planned by people or organizations that may draw inspiration from Hamas assaults against Israel.
“We assess that the actions of Hamas and its allies will serve as an inspiration, the likes of which we haven’t seen since ISIS launched its so-called caliphate several years ago,” Wray said on Tuesday in a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing. “In just the past few weeks, multiple foreign terrorist organizations have called for attacks against Americans and the West.”
Wray spoke at a time when Israeli forces were deepening their raid into Gaza in retaliation for Hamas militant attacks on October 7, which resulted in an estimated 1,400 deaths and hundreds of hostages. Over 8,500 Palestinians have been slain; at least fifty of them are said to have died when an Israeli bombing in Gaza’s Jabalia refugee camp targeted a Hamas commander.
Threats against US interests are, at least in part, the result of organizations looking to exact revenge on Washington for its support of Israel. There have been 27 drone and rocket assaults against US military bases in Iraq and Syria in the last two weeks alone. The Pentagon has placed the responsibility on Iranian-sponsored militias, which both financially and politically back Hamas.
“Here in the United States, our most immediate concern is that violent extremists – individuals or small groups – will draw inspiration from the events in the Middle East to carry out attacks against Americans going about their daily lives,” Wray told the Senate committee.
He added, “The reality is that the terrorism threat has been elevated throughout 2023, but the ongoing war in the Middle East has raised the threat of an attack against Americans in the United States to a whole ‘nother level.”
According to Wray, there is no evidence in the FBI’s possession suggesting Hamas intends or is capable of conducting operations within the United States. He added, though, that the agency hasn’t ruled out the chance that Hamas or another foreign terrorist group will take advantage of the conflict to launch strikes against US interests.
The US is orchestrating the Israel-Palestine War by fully supporting the Israel army’s armed offensive against Palestinians and concealing the genocide carried out by its right-wing Israeli ally in Gaza.
According to Wray, the FBI is currently looking into a number of Americans who have ties to Hamas. He continued, saying that in the past, these people had assisted or funded the group’s activities abroad, but the agency is currently evaluating how the threat might change to encompass assaults within the US.
Republicans in the legislature, such as Kansas Senator Roger Marshall, have expressed concern that Americans are now more vulnerable to terrorist attacks as a result of President Joe Biden’s administration’s lack of efforts to safeguard the country’s borders.
During the fiscal year of the federal government, which concluded on September 30, US Border Patrol personnel came across 172 migrants who were listed as terrorist suspects in the country. In contrast, there were three such meetings in the previous complete fiscal year of former President Donald Trump in office.
