Why France Eyes India’s Powerful Pinaka Rocket System Over Israeli & US Rival

France is exploring the idea of replacing its aging American M270 MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) with an Indian-made weapon, the Pinaka rocket system. This move has caught many by surprise, as several European countries are considering Israel’s advanced PULS rocket system for the same purpose. So why is France looking to India instead?

The Power Players: Pinaka vs. PULS

Let’s start by understanding what makes these rocket systems so powerful and in demand.

  1. PULS (Israel): Known as the “Precise and Universal Launching System,” Israel’s PULS can fire rockets of various sizes, adapting to different mission needs. It’s designed by Elbit Systems and boasts impressive flexibility:
    • 122 mm rockets with a range of 40 km
    • 160 mm rockets that go up to 45 km
    • 306 mm rockets reaching 150 km
    • Heavy missiles with a range of 300 km
  2. This means PULS can strike targets from short to long-range and even launch precision-guided missiles. It’s modular and can be mounted on various types of vehicles, making it suitable for diverse terrains, whether it’s a desert or mountainous region. PULS’s advanced targeting systems also let it operate on its own, receiving real-time data from drones or radar, adding speed and precision.
  3. Pinaka (India): India’s Pinaka Mk.2 is a 214-mm multiple-barrel rocket launcher developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Originally designed to replace older Russian systems, the Pinaka has evolved into a modern artillery powerhouse:
    • The Mk.1 version can hit targets up to 40 km away, while the Mk.2 has an extended range of up to 75 km.
    • The Pinaka rockets are known for their firepower and versatility. A single launcher can fire 12 rockets in just 44 seconds, blanketing an area almost the size of 1000 x 800 meters.
    • The rockets come with various warheads, such as high-explosives and anti-tank mines, allowing them to adapt to different combat situations.

The Pinaka Mk.2 also includes high-tech targeting features, combining both inertial and satellite navigation to ensure it strikes within meters of its target. Mounted on a rugged Tatra vehicle, Pinaka is designed for shoot-and-scoot tactics, moving quickly to avoid enemy retaliation.

Why France Might Choose India’s Pinaka

While many experts expected France to lean toward the PULS system, several factors have likely shifted their focus to Pinaka.

  1. Political Relations: France’s relationship with Israel has been rocky lately, especially over the country’s actions in Gaza and Lebanon. This tension may be prompting France to look beyond Israel for its next rocket system.
  2. Existing Partnerships: India and France have already cooperated in defense technology. Back in 2010, France’s Sagem provided a specialized guidance system, the Sigma 30-RLG, for Pinaka rockets, increasing their accuracy. This partnership, combined with India’s rising status as a defense innovator, could be influencing France’s choice.
  3. Shared Goals in Defense Development: France views India as more than just a buyer of military hardware; it sees potential for joint development projects. By working with India, France could reduce costs and benefit from India’s skilled engineering talent. If this partnership deepens, both countries could gain from each other’s resources, further strengthening their defense capabilities.

What the Future Holds

The Indian Army is already looking to enhance the Pinaka system, potentially extending its range to 120 km and even 300 km with future upgrades. If France decides to go with Pinaka, the decision could open doors for more joint innovations and even inspire other countries to follow suit.

In the world of modern warfare, having a reliable and adaptable rocket system is crucial, and it seems France might have found its match with Pinaka. Whether or not they officially choose India’s system, the very fact that they’re considering it marks a significant shift in the global arms market—one that highlights India’s growing influence as a military partner and innovator.
