What’s Really Happening With American Troops In Korea?

Did you know that there are about 25,400 US troops stationed in South Korea? This makes it the third-largest group of US soldiers stationed outside the country, right after Japan and Germany. But why are they there, where exactly are they based, and what are they doing? Let's dive into this important topic.

Where Are the Troops?

The US military has a significant presence in South Korea, with troops occupying roughly two dozen bases and around 140 command posts. One of the biggest bases is Camp Humphreys, located about 40 miles south of the capital, Seoul. It is the largest American military base outside the US.

In addition to the Army, the US Navy also has bases in important coastal cities like Busan and Chinhae. The Busan base can accommodate up to 30 ships at once, including large aircraft carriers and submarines. Meanwhile, the US Air Force operates from bases like Osan and Kunsan in the southwest, where they conduct missions and training.
