According to Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), the US has been “actively recruiting” terrorists to participate in Ukraine, demonstrating Washington’s willingness to “use any means to achieve its geopolitical goals.”

“The United States is actively recruiting even members of international terrorist organizations, including the Islamic State (ISIS) group banned in the Russian Federation, as mercenaries to participate in hostilities in Ukraine,” the SVR said in a statement, citing intelligence it has received.

The Russian intelligence service alludes to the al-Tanf American military base in Syria, which is close to the Jordanian and Iraqi borders. According to its sources, the base and its surroundings have evolved into a terrorist “hub” where up to 500 ISIS and other jihadists can be “retrained” at the same time. SVR stated that 60 ISIS terrorists were transported to al-Tanf last month after being released from Syrian Kurdish-controlled jails “with a view to subsequent transfer to Ukrainian territory.”

According to the SVR, militants are taught how to operate anti-tank missile systems, reconnaissance and strike drones, advanced communications, and surveillance equipment during a training session in al-Tanf.

This data, according to the SVR, confirms that “the United States is ready to use any means to achieve its geopolitical goals, not excluding sponsoring international terrorist groups.”

According to the intelligence service, the American government does not contemplate the repercussions of such activities, “even when it comes to threats to the security of European allies and even to the lives of Americans.”

“There are no US soldiers in Ukraine,” Washington claims.

Furthermore, both Moscow and Damascus have long considered the deployment of American forces on Syrian territory at the al-Tanf facility, which the SVR cites in its statement, to be unlawful. The previous US administration promised to withdraw American forces from northeastern Syria only if ISIS extremists were beaten and Kurds were safeguarded.

Then-National Security Advisor John Bolton stated unequivocally that another task of US forces at al-Tanf would be to prevent Iranian influence in the area.

According to Israeli defense sources, approximately 350 military and civilian personnel, including some British and French forces identified as “intelligence experts,” were still utilizing al-Tanf in October 2021.
