Ukrainian Air Force Blows Key Russian Bridge Cutting Off Supply Lines

On the 11th day of the invasion, Ukraine made a significant impact by destroying a crucial bridge over the Seim River in Kursk Oblast, Russia. This bridge was vital for Russian logistics, and its loss could severely disrupt their supply lines.

The Big Hit

A dramatic video posted by the Ukrainian Air Force shows the bridge collapsing into the river after a powerful explosion. It appears that advanced guided bombs, either JDAM-ER or Hammer bombs, were used to bring the bridge down. These bombs are known for their precision and powerful impact, much more so than standard HIMARS rockets, which were also previously used but only damaged the bridge.

The Ukrainian Air Force shared the video on Telegram, praising their pilots for targeting key Russian positions and supply routes effectively. They emphasized the importance of these high-precision strikes in their ongoing operations.

Russian Reactions

Initially, Russian media claimed that the bridge was hit by multiple HIMARS rocket attacks, showing images of a damaged section of the bridge with a burning vehicle on it. The bridge was located near Glushkov, about seven miles from the border with Ukraine.

The Seim River wraps around the region, making the bridge an essential route for Russian supplies, including ammunition and food. With the bridge gone, areas like Tetkino and Popovo-Lezhachi are cut off, leaving civilians with only water-based evacuation options.

Russian Countermeasures

In response, the Russians are setting up temporary pontoon bridges across the Seim River to continue their supply operations. However, these are also vulnerable to attacks from HIMARS and air strikes.

Russian analysts suggest that Ukraine’s aim might be to capture the Glushkov district and take control of the E38 highway, a key route in the area. They speculate that if the Ukrainian offensive continues successfully, it could lead to further gains or strategic positioning in the region.

Previous Attempts and Current Developments

This bridge was targeted multiple times before. Recent attempts included strikes by HIMARS rockets on August 13, which caused damage but did not fully destroy the bridge until now.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have destroyed two HIMARS systems in Sumy Oblast, close to the Kursk border. They released a video showing explosions and damage to these systems, though the authenticity of these claims is yet to be independently verified.

The Bigger Picture

In other regions, the situation remains tense. Russian forces are advancing towards Pokrovsk, a crucial Ukrainian defensive position. The advancing Russian troops have created significant challenges for Ukrainian defenses, especially in the Donetsk region.

Ukraine continues to push forward with its operations. Ukrainian troops have made progress into Kursk Oblast, and there are reports of increased Ukrainian control and logistical support. Despite the mounting pressure, Ukraine is determined to fortify its positions and counter the ongoing Russian advances.
