Donald Trump had planned a quiet dinner with an old friend, Ye, the former rapper known as Kanye West, just two days before Thanksgiving.

Following weeks of private phone conversations as Ye lost lucrative contracts and became into a cultural pariah for his antisemitic views, the two men agreed to have dinner together on Tuesday night at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, according to sources familiar with their discussions.

In the opulent halls of Mar-a-Lago, though, Trump might have been stepping into a trap that used his own fondness for spectacle and performance against him. Nick Fuentes, a white nationalist and antisemite, was one of Ye’s three visitors.

Trump later claimed that he didn’t know Fuentes or his background when they dined together; Fuentes backed up this claim in an interview; nonetheless, several patrons at the crowded members-only club were able to identify him. Republicans who were both Trump’s allies and adversaries at the time of the meeting launched a barrage of attacks against him and his barely a week old presidential campaign.

According to two people briefed on the arrangements, Trump’s team is now implementing new screening processes and gatekeeping initiatives as information about how Fuentes and the former president ended there at the same table becomes available.

Republicans are debating whether they want Trump to run for president again in 2024 as the outrage highlights long-standing problems with the current administration.

His administration, which staggered from crisis to crisis, was frequently characterised by disarray and buffeted by the results of his impulses. Additionally, Trump has frequently placed himself in the forefront of racist disputes, from falsely accusing the first Black president of not being a natural-born citizen to announcing his 2016 presidential quest by characterising the majority of Mexican migrants as rapists and drug dealers.

‘The master troll got trolled’

When Trump made a grand appearance at around 8 p.m. on Nov. 22 to meet his guests, he all but ensured the headline-grabbing attention on his guests — and hence the later aftermath.

“We saw everybody in the dining room get up and start applauding, and then the president entered,” Fuentes told NBC News. “He greeted us, and he invited Ye into dinner and Ye said that he wanted to bring us with him to the table. So we walked in and Ye took some pictures with some of the guests in the dining room and then we sat down at the table.”

Ye angered the former president, who attacked Ye’s ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, according to two dinner participants and Ye, who blasted out a “Mar-a-Lago debrief” video to his 32.2 million Twitter followers the following day. Ye criticised Trump for not doing enough to help pay the legal bills of those arrested in the Jan. 6 Capitol riots; he also told Trump he might run for president against him and said Trump should instead be his running mate.

“Trump is really impressed with Nick Fuentes,” Ye said in the video.

“Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, was asking me for advice concerning some of his difficulties, in particular ‘having to do with his business,’” Trump said in his last statement about the dinner, issued Saturday. “We also discussed, to a lesser extent, politics, where I told him he should definitely not run for President, ‘any voters you may have should vote for TRUMP.’ Anyway, we got along great, he expressed no anti-Semitism, & I appreciated all of the nice things he said about me on ‘Tucker Carlson.’ Why wouldn’t I agree to meet? Also, I didn’t know Nick Fuentes.”

However, in response to the criticism, the campaign started reviewing internal processes to make sure someone like Fuentes never works with Trump again, according to two sources with knowledge of the conversations.

The U.S. Secret Service dissociated itself from the event and said in a statement on Monday that Mar-a-security Lago’s is in charge of “who may have been allowed access to their facilities” because the establishment is “a private club.”

On a conservative webcast on Monday, Ye, Yiannopoulos, and Fuentes were supposed to discuss how the dinner came about, but the rapper walked off after being questioned about claims that Jews control banking and the media.

His entourage came behind.

Getting into Mar-a-Lago

The pre-Thanksgiving dinner, which occurred exactly one week before Thanksgiving, was the third shock to rock Trump’s campaign.

Before the turkey and stuffing were served, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling requiring Trump to provide Congress with his tax returns. This decision ended a protracted legal battle that began when Trump said in 2014 that he would “love” to share his tax returns if he were elected president. Additionally, on November 18, just four days before the Ye dinner, the Justice Department named a special counsel to look into the Jan. 6, 2021, disturbances at the US Capitol as well as Trump’s holding of extremely sensitive government papers at Mar-a-Lago while he was still in office.

Giorno claimed that despite being an unintentional participant, she had been trapped in the blast radius of the supper with Ye and Fuentes. Ye’s flight landed at around 5 p.m., in the thick of the South Florida metropolis’ rush hour on a rainy day, and she didn’t have time to contact or text anyone with a heads-up, she claimed. She also didn’t understand there would be a confrontation on the night she drove the team to Mar-a-Lago. The group travelled to Mar-a-Lago for three hours instead of the usual two.

Giorno claimed in an interview that she became aware of Ye, Fuentes, and the other man’s improper attire about halfway to Mar-a-Lago.

“All of you are wearing jeans. Did they not tell you about the dress code?” she said she asked.

Ye said he hadn’t been informed and that “I doubt Nick is going to get in anyway.”

“Nick,” she said she asked, “what’s your last name?”

Fuentes gave his last name.

“I’m going to kill Milo,” Giorno said she thought.

Giorno continued to drive and remarked that the Secret Service and private security would certainly make it difficult for them to enter Mar-a-Lago. Giorno claimed she also realised she had left her driver’s licence at home, forcing her to enter using a credit card bearing her name as identification.

Giorno claimed that the reason the four of them were allowed entry was because she had Ye in the car, she frequently visits the site, and she had been there seven days earlier for Trump’s campaign announcement.

Giorno added that while Trump enthusiastically welcomed everyone and greeted the group in the foyer, he was perplexed to see his former aide alongside Ye. Giorno claimed that she made an effort to leave Trump alone with Ye.

“Sir, it’s really good to see you again,” she said she told Trump. “My understanding is you’re supposed to have a private meeting with Ye and I’m happy to go to the bar with these two guys while you have dinner.”

But Trump deferred.

“I’ll leave that to Ye. Do you want them to join?” Trump asked, according to Giorno.

“Yes,” Ye replied. “Let’s all eat.”

“Great,” Trump said. “Let’s go out to the patio.”
