Recently, Beijing gave Tesla the go-ahead to launch its driver-assistance technology, dubbed “Full Self-Driving,” or FSD. According to a recent report, Tesla may be testing FSD-equipped cars on the world’s biggest auto market’s metropolitan streets and highways.

Ten Tesla cars equipped with FSD are being tested in advance of what may be a much bigger planned rollout later this year, according to a story from the government-backed Shanghai Observer, which was cited by Reuters.

In recent months, Elon Musk has been methodically laying the groundwork for an FSD rollout in China. Tesla’s strengthening connections with China were amply demonstrated by his unexpected visit to the country on April 28. There, he met with Premier Li Qiang and other high-ranking officials.

After one day, on April 29, news of Tesla’s partnership with Chinese tech giant Baidu for mapping and navigation software to assist FSD, including meeting regulatory standards for data security and privacy, surfaced in US business media. According to some accounts, Musk was permitted by senior Chinese officials to launch FSD in a restricted capacity.

According to a May Reuters story, Tesla was getting ready to register FSD with Chinese regulators to roll it out later this year. Additionally, according to Chinese official media, Tesla had started construction on a Megapack facility in Shanghai.

In light of the global decline in EV sales, Tesla will have a fantastic opportunity to diversify its revenue sources with the further implementation of FSD in China. This also enables them to more effectively compete with local rivals in China.
