Spain refuses port call to a ship carrying arms bound for Israel from Chennai, as it has banned licenses to sell weaponry to Tel Aviv due to the increasing number of civilian casualties in the Israeli offensive.
According to José Manuel Albares, Spain’s Foreign Minister, a ship transporting weapons from Chennai to Israel has been denied admission to dock at one of the country’s ports.
According to marine tracking portals and Spanish media, the cargo ship Marianne Danica, flying the Danish flag, sailed from Chennai on April 8 and was its route to the port of Haifa in Israel.
Spain and Belgium have both banned their licenses to sell weaponry to Tel Aviv in response to the Israeli offensive in Gaza, which has resulted in an increasing number of civilian casualties.
During the weekly news conference, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal simply stated that they had reviewed the ship’s report and would provide further details.
According to a source, “Investigation will reveal if the items on board were cleared for export and if the end user is the same as reported by The Guardian because there are items that are not banned for export.”
“This is the first time we have done this because it is the first time we have detected a ship carrying a shipment of arms to Israel that wants to call at a Spanish port,” Mr. Alvares said in a statement to reporters on the matter on Thursday in Brussels.
“This will be a consistent policy with any ship carrying arms to Israel that wants to call at Spanish ports. The Foreign Ministry will systematically reject such stopovers for one obvious reason: the Middle East does not need more weapons, it needs more peace,” he stated.
Local reports state that the ship was carrying 27 tons of explosives. It was scheduled to dock at Spain’s Cartegena.
Mr. Albares claimed in February that since October 7, they have not granted licenses for the export of weapons to Israel, which has led them to “realize” the significance of a “fair and lasting solution” to the Palestinian dilemma.
The event occurs in the midst of a dispute between the coalition partners of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and his party over the ship Borkum, which was scheduled to dock at Cartegena port on Friday due to accusations that it was carrying weapons intended for Israel. The armaments being transported, according to the Spanish authorities, are intended for the Czech Republic.
Two licenses for Israel’s weaponry exports had been suspended by Belgium.
Amnesty International Spain posted on social media site “X” that “we welcome the decision of the Spanish government to deny the transit authorization of the vessel Marianne Danica, in accordance with Tratado (treaty) on Arms Trade and Spanish law.”
Additionally, the date aligns with the Israeli ground offensive within Rafah. Since the assault began on May 7, at least 6,30,000 Palestinians have been pushed from Rafah, according to the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA).
