Sikh Politician Escapes Assassination At Golden Temple

Sukhbir Singh Badal, a prominent Sikh politician and former deputy chief minister of Punjab, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Wednesday outside the Golden Temple in Amritsar, northern India. The Golden Temple, a sacred site for Sikhs, is not only a place of worship but also the location of a tragic military operation in the 1980s that left hundreds dead, making this attack all the more chilling.

The incident happened as Badal, who was in a wheelchair, was visiting the temple to perform sewa—volunteer service as an act of repentance for decisions made during his time in office from 2007 to 2017. While journalists and bystanders watched, a man identified as Narain Singh Chaura, a former Khalistani militant with a criminal past, approached the temple's entrance. Without warning, he pulled out a gun and fired at Badal.
