Former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe has been shot during a campaign speech. The 67-year-old was shot from a distance of about 10 feet (3 meters). Reports claim that the suspect Yamagami Tatsuya, 41, remained on the scene up until his apprehension.

According to police and fire personnel, former Japanese Prime Minister Abe is apparently displaying no signs of life and has suffered from cardiac arrest after being rushed to the hospital.

The 67-year-old was shot from a distance of about 10 feet (3 meters). According to reports, the suspect Yamagami Tatsuya, 41, remained on the scene up until his apprehension on suspicion of attempted homicide.

Following the announcement of Abe’s collapse, Nikkei 225 futures lost gains while the yen and US Treasuries climbed.

According to reports, Shinzo Abe, a former Japanese prime minister, was shot in the chest at around 11:30 a.m. in Nara, a city close to Kyoto. NHK reported hearing what they described as “consecutive bangs,” and then seeing Abe bleeding, reportedly from the neck. He apparently took a shot to the left of his chest from behind.

Abe is reportedly having a heart arrest, while Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) members claim he is just unconscious.

According to NHK, a suspect, who is thought to be a young or middle-aged guy, was captured at the scene with a shotgun.
