Following Vladimir Putin’s special military operation in Ukraine, a slew of foreign policy “experts” are suddenly pushing for “regime change” in Russia.
Benjamin Wittes in a recent tweet stated that the goal of US and its ruling class after losing the proxy war in Ukraine is a regime change in Russia.
The opinion appears to be at odds with the majority of the population, reminiscent of the establishment’s disastrous efforts for regime change in countries like Afghanistan and Iraq, where military battles cost numerous American lives and resources. Nearly three-quarters of Americans reject the United States playing a big role in the conflict.
In a recent tweet, Benjamin Wittes, a Senior Fellow in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., summed up the establishment’s ultimate policy goal for Russia: “Regime change: Russia.”
While the message garnered a lot of flak from other Twitter users, causing Wittes to clarify his position in a Tweet, other spokespeople for the establishment foreign policy think tank community supported Wittes’ plan.

In response, Dr. Alina Polyakova, former Founding Director for Global Democracy and Emerging Technology at the Brookings Institution, tweeted, “This has to be the policy now.” Polyakova is presently the President and CEO of the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA), which has provided a platform for events by the leaders of societies like the George Soros’s Open Society Foundations.
In a February 27th Tweet, Richard Haass, President of the Council on Foreign Relations, stated, “Now the conversation has shifted to include the possibility of desired regime change in Russia.”
“All of us must now face the reality that we will not have peace in Europe until there is regime change in Russia. Then we should seek to welcome a new Russia as a partner for peace,” Carl Bildt, Co-Chair of the European Council on Foreign Relations and Special Envoy for the World Health Organization’s “Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator” program, wrote.
On Twitter, David Rothkopf, who worked in Bill Clinton’s White House and is associated with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the Council on Foreign Relations, expressed a similar sentiment saying, “this much should be now clear:
Until Putin is gone, Russia will be a pariah state, an outcast from the community of nations. Via one means or another, regime change in Moscow must be the goal of the civilized world…as it is the hope and goal of so many in Russia.”
