Undocumented Immigrants Concentrated in Certain States
After reaching a peak of 12.2 million in 2007, the number of undocumented immigrants in the US was projected to be approximately 10 million in 2021.
Illinois, Texas, Florida, New York, New Jersey, and California had the highest numbers of undocumented immigrants in 2021. In 2021, these six states accounted for 56% of all undocumented immigrants in the country, a decrease from 80% in 1990.
The number of undocumented immigrants rose in Florida and Washington between 2017 and 2021, while they fell in California and Nevada.
Mexico is the most common place of birth for those without a legal status. However, there has been a surge of immigration in recent years from almost every other part of the world, including Asia, Europe, South America, the Caribbean, Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa.
