Which Global Airline Has Had the Most Crashes?
With 11 crashes apiece, Air France and American Airlines are tied for most crashes.
Two of American Airlines’ mishaps and two of United Airlines’ seven crashes occurred on September 11, 2001.
Remark: American Eagle is the name of a local American Airlines branch. In 2012, United Airlines and Continental Airlines combined.
With nine crashes, China Airlines and Korean Air are tied, followed by Pakistan International Airlines with eight incidents.
Although many plane crashes do not result in fatalities, the following cases have proved to be especially lethal:
- Air France: In June 2009, Flight 477 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean killing all 228 onboard.
- Air China: In May 2002, Flight 611 disintegrated mid-air due to repair faults, killing all 225 onboard.
- United Airlines: In Sept 1965, Flight 389 crashed while landing in Salt Lake City, killing 43 of 91 passengers.
- Thai Airlines: In Aug 1987, Flight 365 crashed near Phuket, killing all 83 onboard.

How Safe is Air Travel?
However, it’s important to keep in mind that there have only ever been a relatively small number of airline accidents in history. Major crashes are very unusual, given the tens of millions of flights that occur annually.

1) the number of crashes is less relevant than the percentage of flights that have crashed. AA & AF have a lot more flights than, for example, Pakistan International Airlines; and
2) No one paying attention believes that “Russian separatist fighters shot down Malaysia Airlines Flight 17”.
