The Indian government has decided to create a new missile testing center in Andhra Pradesh, located on the eastern coast of the country. This exciting news was announced after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, last week.
Where Will It Be?
The new testing center will be built in the Nagayalanka area of Andhra Pradesh. While the government hasn’t shared when the project will be completed, it promises to be a significant step for India’s defense capabilities.

Current Testing Facilities
Right now, the most important missile testing site in India is on Dr. Abdul Kalam Island, off the coast of Odisha. Many well-known Indian missiles, like the Agni and BrahMos, have been tested there.
Recently, India successfully tested a new missile-assisted torpedo delivery system called ‘SMART.’ This system enhances the Indian Navy’s ability to target submarines from much greater distances than before.
India’s Growing Defense Industry
India is not just focusing on testing missiles; it is also ramping up production of homegrown weapons. Since 2017, India has increased its military exports by ten times. Last year, it sold arms worth about $2.3 billion and aims to boost this figure to $6 billion soon. India is currently exporting military equipment to around 85 countries, including missiles, helicopters, and surveillance systems.
New Developments on the Horizon
In addition to the missile center, the Indian government has recently approved the purchase of two nuclear-powered attack submarines, which are estimated to cost around $5.4 billion. However, it may take up to 12 years to get the first submarine ready. India is also set to acquire 31 armed MQ-9B Predator drones from the US for about $4 billion, further enhancing its defense capabilities.
