In 1952, Murillo-Rohde moved to the United States to pursue her education, eventually earning a nursing degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She returned to Panama to work as a nurse, and quickly gained a reputation for her dedication and compassion. She went on to serve as the head of the nursing department at the Santo Tomas Hospital, one of the largest and most prestigious hospitals in Panama.
