North Korea has just launched a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) called the Hwasong-19, which they say is the longest-range missile they have ever tested. This test is especially significant because it took place while the United States and South Korea were conducting large military exercises nearby, simulating attacks on North Korean missile launchers.
The Hwasong-19 and Its Impressive Size
North Korea's state media, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), shared videos and photos of the Hwasong-19 being launched. This missile was carried on a massive vehicle known as a transporter-erector-launcher (TEL), which has 11 wheels—more than the 9 wheels used for the previous Hwasong-18. This larger TEL hints that the new missile is bigger and possibly more powerful. The photos also show the missile being launched from a canister hidden in a forest, emphasizing North Korea’s ability to conduct tests discreetly.
