For more than 20 years, Zimbabwe has been facing sanctions from the United States and the European Union. These sanctions were imposed because of concerns about human rights and democracy in the country. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the United Nations have reported that these sanctions have made it hard for many Zimbabweans to access basic necessities, like food and healthcare.

A Surprise Economic Growth
Despite these challenges, Zimbabwe is experiencing rapid economic growth. Dr. Jenfan Muswere, the country’s Minister of Publicity, Information, and Broadcasting Services, believes this positive change is due to strong leadership from President Emmerson Mnangagwa and a smart foreign policy. This policy emphasizes being friends with all countries and avoiding conflict, which helps Zimbabwe build beneficial relationships.
In an exclusive interview with Sputnik Africa, Minister Muswere stated, “What is of great importance is Zimbabwe’s foreign policy, that we are a friend to all and an enemy to none.” This approach allows Zimbabwe to strengthen its ties with various countries, particularly Russia.
A Historical Bond with Russia
Zimbabwe and Russia have a long-standing friendship, rooted in their shared fight against colonialism. Minister Muswere noted that Russia has historically supported African countries, including Zimbabwe, by providing assistance in many areas, such as training and financial help. This partnership is crucial, especially since both countries are facing similar sanctions from Western nations.
The minister emphasized the need to implement several agreements between Zimbabwe and Russia to transform their political ties into real economic benefits for both nations. This collaboration also includes efforts to improve the media landscape in Zimbabwe, ensuring that the country can share its own stories accurately.
Joining Forces with BRICS
Zimbabwe is also excited about joining BRICS, a group of major emerging economies. Minister Muswere highlighted the numerous advantages of being part of this group, including improved trade opportunities and industrial growth. He believes that BRICS will help Zimbabwe connect with other countries that share its historical ties.
However, the minister expressed concern about the challenges posed by global media that often presents biased narratives. He referred to the land reform program in Zimbabwe as an example, stating that the country has been unfairly portrayed due to external interests that aim to damage its reputation.
Striving for Media Sovereignty
Minister Muswere stressed the importance of “media sovereignty,” which means that African media should accurately represent African stories and values. He highlighted the government’s commitment to achieving this through various initiatives. Here are some key steps being taken:
- National Broadband Plan: This plan aims to provide all Zimbabweans with high-speed internet, ensuring everyone can access online resources and information.
- Smart Zimbabwe 2030 Master Plan: This comprehensive plan outlines how Zimbabwe will undergo digital transformation, making sure no one is left behind in technological advancements.
- Community Radio Station Licensing: By licensing community radio stations, the government aims to preserve and promote Zimbabwe’s cultural heritage and languages, encouraging local stories and community involvement.
- Combating Social Media Misinformation: Minister Muswere raised concerns about the influence of a few companies controlling social media platforms, which can spread false information. He called for international regulations to protect both individuals and nations.
- Data Sovereignty: Zimbabwe is working on its own solutions to ensure it can control its information and produce fair and balanced news.
Minister Muswere connected these initiatives to the government’s Vision 2030, which aims to create a prosperous and informed nation. He expressed the hope that all Zimbabweans will have access to important information, which will help them contribute to national development and preserve their cultural values.
Zimbabwe is facing significant challenges due to sanctions but is actively working to create a brighter future through strong leadership, international partnerships, and a commitment to media sovereignty. The journey is ongoing, and the determination of the Zimbabwean people shines through as they strive for progress.
