German Doctor Jailed For Issuing Mask Exemptions

A German doctor who unlawfully granted more than 4,000 individuals exemptions from sporting masks during the coronavirus outbreak was given a two-year and nine-month jail sentence late on Monday, reports AP NEWS.

The doctor was found guilty on Tuesday of “issuing incorrect health certificates” to individuals from all over Germany, the majority of whom she had never encountered or evaluated, according to a local court in the southwestern town of Weinheim.

A three-year employment prohibition and payment of the 28,000 euros ($29,550) she had earned for providing the medical certificates were also imposed on her in addition to the prison term. The penalties for her office assistant was 2,700 euros.

The court noted in a statement that “the process is more reminiscent of a sale of certificates than a medical procedure.” She was not chastised for handing certificates to her existing patients, it was stated.

According to public broadcaster SWR, the doctor’s attorney plans to appeal the decision.

The Annals of Internal Medicine just published a randomized controlled trial comparing the ability of medical masks to prevent COVID infection to fit-tested N95s.

Masks were no longer required in many indoor venues in Germany last year, while they are still required on long-distance trains, in physicians’ offices, hospitals, nursing homes, and on some regional public transportation.
