According to Zahidullah Khan, a police officer from the Swat district, the diplomats were on their way to a popular tourist resort in the Swat Valley. They were being escorted by a police van when an improvised explosive device (IED) suddenly went off, directly targeting the police vehicle.

In the explosion, one police officer was killed on the spot, and three others were injured. The diplomats, however, escaped unharmed. The group included ambassadors from several countries like Indonesia, Portugal, Kazakhstan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Turkmenistan, Vietnam, Iran, Russia, and Tajikistan.

It turns out that the diplomats were invited to the Swat Valley by the local Chamber of Commerce. Luckily, despite the deadly attack, all of the foreign ambassadors were safe and were quickly evacuated back to the capital, Islamabad.

Senior police official Mohammad Ali Gandapur confirmed that the bomb was aimed at the police vehicle, not the diplomats. The Pakistani government expressed deep sorrow for the loss of life and reassured that all diplomats were safely returned. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement offering condolences to the families of the victims, and President Asif Ali Zardari condemned the attack, calling the terrorists “enemies of humanity.”

In response to the attack, the Pakistani military and police closed off the roads in the area and launched a search operation, imposing a curfew to ensure public safety while they hunted down those responsible.

The Swat Valley, where the attack took place, has a long history of violence and has been a hotspot for Islamist militants. Since the militants broke a cease-fire with the government in late 2022, attacks have surged in the region. Pakistani counterterrorism forces are always on high alert in the area because of its troubled past, including the infamous 2012 attack when Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai was shot by militants.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for this latest attack, but it’s a stark reminder that the threat of terrorism still looms large in the region, despite ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security.
