In an X post, Elon Musk said he would ban iPhones and put them in a Faraday cage if they integrate with OpenAI, citing security concerns after it was revealed that Apple is capable of producing its own AI module.

Ultimately, the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference was a complete failure for Apple, as the company’s stock fell 1.9%, marking the lowest WWDC performance since 2010 and the fourth lowest during the iPhone era.

This was not how it was intended to happen: Apple was scheduled to announce the ChatGPT artificial intelligence elements of Open AI and claim ownership of them, which would have resulted in the long-overdue rise in AAPL stock, which has lagged most pure AI names. But things got out of hand when the public heard that Apple was even capable of producing its own AI module (the “introduction” of an iPad calculator did not help Apple’s trailblazing image).

But AAPL’s problems didn’t end with the stock’s decline. Soon after the end, Elon Musk casually mentioned that Apple’s approach means that “we can never turn it off,” implying that it is an always-on spying system that feeds constant data to the OpenAI LLM (and who knows what and who else), in response to Andrej Karpathy, the founder of OpenAI, who noted that the ridiculously named “Apple Intelligence,” as it will be called (and Elon Musk said it is “neither Apple nor intelligent”).

The fireworks started at that point.

Musk first warned an X user that he might have to launch his phone “if Apple actually integrates woke nanny AI spyware into their OS” after realizing that his sworn enemy Sam Altman (whose “non-profit” ChatGPT only exists because of funding from Musk in the first place) is using his chatbot to supplant Amazon as the most ubiquitous spyware system in the world by having it installed across the entire Apple ecosystem before adamantly informing Tim Cook that “he doesn’t want” the newest offering from Apple and threatening to “ban all Apple devices from the premises of my companies unless this creepy spyware is stopped.”

To emphasize that further, the CEO of Tesla stated “If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my company.” “Visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage,” and “that is an unacceptable security violation.”

The most important criticism of Apple was reserved for last. Musk called the company a moron for not being able to even develop artificial intelligence (AI) and even more so for having promised that OpenAI would “somehow capable of protecting your privacy” while “handing your data over to a third-party AI that they don’t understand and can’t themselves create is not protecting privacy at all!”

The punchline: “Apple has no clue what’s actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They’re selling you down the river.”

This particular outburst by the richest man in the world (or second, or third, or wherever he is now) is a good example of the impending AI wars, in which competing AI vendors will do everything in their power to have their LLM be the software of choice for the entire world due to its ubiquitous data gather and analysis, making China’s “always on” spying nanny state seem like amateur hour by comparison. Now, we assume that a large portion of Elon’s outrage is sincere (mixed with a tiny bit of personal self-interest to have Grok handle the world’s AI requests).
