Dr Li-Meng Yan wants to ‘tell the truth of the Origins of COVID-19’

Dr Li-Meng Yan was forced to leave her friends and family in China. “If I tell it in Hong Kong, the moment I start to tell it, I will be disappeared and killed. No one can hear me” she said during a Fox News interview. Dr Li-Meng Yan, who is now hiding accuses China of not acting responsibly and covering up information about the new SARS-like coronavirus that should be globally known. She said she has come to the US to ‘tell the truth of the Origins of COVID-19’ to the world – to let people understand how terrible and dangerous this new virus can be.

Secret Investigation on Coronavirus

‘This is about whether all humans in the world can survive’, says Dr Li-Meng Yan. She was one of the first scientists to start research about COVID-19 since December 31st when the emergence of SARS like coronavirus was reported in Wuhan, China. This has grown into a public health crisis since then.

Dr Leo Poon, who was her supervisor and WHO consultant asked Dr Li-Meng Yan to do a secret investigation of what really happened in Mainland China. The Chinese government denied the experts to do research, this is when she turned to her friends.

She talked to a friend who is a scientist at the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC China). He told her that there was a family-cluster-cases, which obviously hints that this virus should be capable of human-to-human transmission. However, WHO did not confirm that this virus could be transmitted among humans for several weeks.

The Coverup

Dr Yan showed a conversation happening in a group full of clinical doctors in China. She shows a message by a doctor, asking if any clinical doctors in China are willing to share this information about this SARS like virus. It was surprising how other doctors in the group told her ‘don’t ask’ as ‘this is too sensitive’.

She told Leo Poon about her research, and he told her to be careful. Poon even warned Dr Yan before, ‘don’t touch the red line’ or don’t go across the Chinese government’s principles.

She felt that the information was important and urgent and should be known to everyone. ‘But then he didn’t do anything’ says Dr Yan. She waited but she didn’t see any action or response.

She also recalls Prof Malik Peiris, the co-director of WHO labs, to know all about how terrible the situation is as a virologist and doctor. But their was no specific action taken.

Dr Li-Meng Yan flees Hong Kong

On 27th of April, Dr Yan got a ticket for the US and took the flight on 28th of April. She knew that any step before the flights took off, she could be stopped. ‘I had to leave as soon as possible’ says Dr Yan. A political exile group helped her to escape from China.

When she arrived at LAX ‘initially everything goes off well. I pass the customs and get my luggage’ says Dr Yan. But then at the exit there were two officers trying to stop her. She said she didn’t actually know the reason why they were there. They brought her to office where they asked where she was from and what did she do.

“I had to tell them the truth,” she said. “I’m doing the right thing. So I tell them that ‘don’t let me go back to China. I’m the one who came to tell the truth here of COVID-19… And please protect me. If not, the China government will kill me.”

The Threatening Cyberattacks

By the mid of May the cyber attacks began. This ‘Cyber Military’ was attacking her from Twitter. She said ‘they tried to spread a lot of rumour, ruin my reputation and said that I was lying’. They created a fake Facebook account under her Chinese name, Yan Limeng using her profile to tell people that she was kidnapped by the Americans and that she tried to lie to people. They even told that she had mental disorders.

There were also steps like deleting her webpage from the University of Hong Kong website. She said that when the situation goes public she is likely to be attacked by such claims – “All full of lies”.

The danger: friends, family and colleagues under Surveillance

Among all of this a different scene was unveiling in Hong Kong while she was still on the flight. The China Ministry of the State Security went to her hometown Qingdon with the policeman to trouble her family.

‘I am afraid of the safety of my family and friends and all the people who had sent me the information. No matter doctors, or officers or lab people, researchers, scientists. They all know it clearly they trust me and I need to protect them’ says Dr Yan. The Chinese government is trying to trouble her friends and family and all those who have tried to help her are under surveillance and constant threat.

Dr Yan says that a vaccine or any magic solution should not be expected at this moment. What is needed is understanding where the virus comes from, doing the right research and to protect ourselves, protect our family, our friend and anyone around us in the right way. ‘That is the one right thing we could do now and that is very critical for everyone of us’, says Dr Yan.
