When Steven Monteleone starts his car, the engine roars to life. His 1967 convertible, which is over 50 years old, is powered by a 1147 cc straight-4 Triumph engine. On this warm summer day, he rides through the streets of Ortley Beach with the top down and the sun is shining.

However, he then does something very unexpected. The unfathomable. Monteleone cruises down a Jersey Shore boat dock and into Barnegat Bay in his lovingly restored fjord green beauty. Monteleone, you see, is the proud owner of a one-of-a-kind Amphicar. It’s half a car, half a boat, and all vintage fun.

Since he was in his twenties, Monteleone, aka Captain Monty, has coveted one of these. He’s now 63 years old and living his dream. In 2015, he was fortunate to obtain one of these unique rides, which he has meticulously cared for ever since. Onlookers smile, wave, give thumbs up, and are always eager to engage in conversation about his unique car — or boat, if you prefer — when he drives it about town.

According to the manufacturer, 3,878 Amphicars were produced in West Germany between 1961 and 1968. Monty estimates that there are roughly 400 in the United States and about 90 in Europe. He joined a select group of individuals in this regard. On top of that, he believes he may be the only owner in New Jersey.

The speed of this type 770 Amphicar in the water is around 7 knots, and on the highway it is around 70 mph. In either case, it’s not exactly lightning fast, but this isn’t a high-performance ride. It’s all about the experience.

He jokes, “That car almost got me a divorce.” With a sly grin on his lips, he said that he didn’t tell his wife about the car until it was delivered to his house. “She loves it though.”

Naturally, every vintage or classic car requires a great deal of tender love and care. Even with the required upkeep and repairs, he is unlikely to sell his Amphicar anytime soon. He hopes to pass it down to his two children, but first they must learn to drive a stick.

It’s a real treasure, and Captain Monty appreciates the attention.
