International Beer Day, celebrated every first Friday in August, shines a spotlight on beer lovers worldwide. A recent survey reveals that Latin America and Southern Europe lead the pack in beer consumption, with Mexico, Greece, and Spain topping the list. In contrast, beer drinking is less common in parts of Asia like Malaysia and Indonesia due to religious beliefs. Germany, Ireland, and the UK, known for their famous beers, have a moderate but enthusiastic beer-drinking population. So, whether you’re toasting with a cold one in Mexico or enjoying a brew in Berlin, International Beer Day is your chance to join the global celebration of this beloved drink!

Not all countries celebrate this day equally, though. Some places have more beer enthusiasts than others. According to recent data from Statista, Latin America is a hotspot for beer drinkers. In Mexico, a whopping 53% of adults regularly enjoy a beer. Greece and Spain also have high numbers of beer drinkers, with 52% and 51%, respectively. Italy and Portugal are a bit lower but still notable, with 47% and 37% of people regularly drinking beer.

In Southern Europe, people love their beer too, as shown in a colorful infographic from Statista.

Over in Asia, where many famous breweries are located, fewer people drink beer regularly. China and South Korea lead in the region with 41% of adults drinking beer often. Thailand follows with 38%, Hong Kong with 36%, and Taiwan with 31%. In contrast, Malaysia and Indonesia have much lower numbers—16% and 10%, respectively. This is largely due to religious beliefs in these countries, where alcohol consumption is generally discouraged.

Germany, Ireland, and the United Kingdom, known for their rich beer traditions like wheat beer and Guinness, are close to the average global rate of 35% beer drinkers. About a third of adults in these countries say they regularly enjoy a beer.

So, whether you’re in Latin America, Southern Europe, or somewhere in Asia, International Beer Day is a great time to join in the global celebration of beer. Cheers!
