According to a Phys story on Wednesday, archaeologists found what they suspect to be the remnants of the Poseidon temple close to Samikon, Greece.
The remains were discovered and are being studied by the Austrian Archaeological Institute in collaboration with scholars from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Kiel University, and the Elis Ephorate of Antiquities, reports The Jerusalem Post.
The site where the remains were discovered matches to the place described by ancient Greek historian Strabo when he detailed the shrine 2,000 years ago.
Why do researchers believe its the temple of Poseidon?
It is known that numerous tsunamis have struck the region, which is close to the Peloponnese coast, throughout both ancient and modern times. Despite the fact that it would seem that people would stay away from such a location, this could be further proof that the ruins are those of Poseidon’s temple, who was thought to be the source of earthquakes and tsunamis.
The remains were first discovered in 2021, but it was not until recently that archaeologists concluded they were likely the remnants of a Poseidon temple.
We still need to learn more about the structure, and in-depth archaeological, geoarchaeological, and geophysical investigations are planned over the coming years to help us learn more about what the construction was like and how it developed.
