Kia and Hyundai Top the List
The full-size pickup truck tradition of dominating the list of most stolen cars in the United States was broken in 2023 when the Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Sonata, and Kia Optima secured the top spot. A few reasons for the shift are social media trends that show how to steal these cars and security flaws in Asian models.
In addition to Hyundai and Kia vehicles, full-size pickup trucks and other mid-size vehicles including the Ford F-150, Honda Accord, Honda Civic, and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 are on the list.
2023 had the greatest amount of vehicle thefts in the country, with 208,668 automobiles reported stolen from California. The District of Columbia had more than three times the national theft rate—1,149.71 thefts per 100,000 residents—making it the state with the highest theft rate in the country.
34% of reported stolen passenger cars were found within a day, and over 85% of reported thefts were eventually found, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
Last year, GreatGameIndia reported that several Kia and Hyundai cars were stolen due to viral videos on TikTok and other social media platforms teaching people how to start cars with USB cables and exploit a security vulnerability in some models.
