WATCH: Young British Soldier Regrets Joining Ukraine’s Foreign Legion

James Scott Rhys Anderson, a 22-year-old former British Army soldier, has found himself in the middle of an international incident. Captured by Russian forces, Anderson was taken near the village of Plekhovo, deep inside Russia’s Kursk Region, while fighting for Ukraine’s International Legion. This mysterious group, made up of foreign fighters, is labeled as mercenaries by Moscow.

Videos of Anderson’s interrogation have surfaced on Russian Telegram channels, offering a rare glimpse into his story. Once a signalman in the British Army, Anderson served in the 1st Signal Brigade, 22 Signal Regiment, 252 Squadron from 2019 to 2023. After leaving the military, his life took a turn for the worse. “It was a stupid idea,” Anderson admitted during one of the interrogations. “I had just lost everything – my job, and my dad was away in prison.”

Struggling with financial troubles and personal loss, Anderson was drawn to an advertisement on TV promoting Ukraine’s International Legion. In what he now calls a rash decision, he applied online, flew from London to Krakow, Poland, and eventually crossed into Ukraine by bus.

A Dangerous Mission

Anderson claims he never intended to end up on Russian soil. In his words, his commanders took away his belongings, including his passport and smartphone, and forced him to cross the border. “I don’t want to be here,” he told his interrogators, describing how he was ordered into a car and sent to the frontlines against his will.

The UK Ministry of Defense has not commented on Anderson’s capture, but the Foreign Office confirmed they are “supporting the family of a British man following reports of his detention.”

A Larger Picture of the Conflict

Anderson’s case is one piece of the broader conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which continues to escalate. Recent reports indicate Ukraine has deployed some of its most experienced troops into Russia’s Kursk Region in an attempt to slow Moscow’s advances. However, the campaign has been costly for Ukraine, with significant casualties and heavy equipment losses reported.

The UK remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine, with Defense Secretary John Healey recently affirming on X (formerly Twitter) that Britain will back Kiev “for as long as it takes.” Meanwhile, Moscow insists no peace talks can occur until Ukrainian forces are fully removed from Russian territory.

A Grim Reminder

Anderson’s story serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of war. His journey from a British Army signalman to a prisoner of war highlights the dangers faced by foreign fighters who choose to join Ukraine’s ranks. For Anderson, what began as an attempt to rebuild his life has become a cautionary tale about the perils of seeking purpose in the midst of conflict.
