Recently, Hungarian authorities arrested several people in connection with a dangerous plot against important figures in the country. This came after the US intelligence services provided crucial information about the threat.
According to a report by Telex, a local news outlet, US officials alerted Hungary about a group of young individuals who were planning to buy weapons for an attack. The government confirmed that they received this warning just in time to prevent a potential disaster.
The attack was reportedly set to happen on Wednesday, a significant day when Hungary commemorates the 1956 uprising against the socialist government. US intelligence became aware of the plot by intercepting online conversations among the group members, which revealed their intentions.
The story took a turn when Telex linked the plot to a police raid that took place over the weekend in Budapest’s nightlife area. During this raid, officers arrested six people as they left a popular pub called ‘Legend.’ The pub’s owner shared this information with the media.
Hungary’s government has taken the situation very seriously, emphasizing their commitment to the safety of important individuals in light of recent international events, where politicians have been targeted.
This year alone, two high-profile Western politicians faced assassination attempts. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was injured in May but has since recovered. In a separate incident, former US President Donald Trump was grazed by a bullet at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, with another assassination attempt reported near his golf course in Florida last November.
Interestingly, reports suggest that both the man who shot Fico and the would-be assassin of Trump showed strong support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
