According to local reports, a US Embassy official was found deceased in Ukraine’s capital.
The body of an unknown embassy attaché was discovered Tuesday at Kyiv’s Hilton Hotel, according to online publication Strana UA, citing law enforcement sources.
According to unidentified reports, the attaché’s body was discovered at the city’s Hilton Hotel on Tuesday.
U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller later confirmed the fatality, saying at a press conference on Wednesday that the individual was a US government employee “who was under chief of mission authority” at the embassy in Kyiv.
“I hate to even bring this up—but I know sometimes conspiracies theories spin out of control—that it is our understanding that he died of natural causes, and there’s no sign of foul play,” Miller said.
The Context
The death came more than two years after Russia’s war with Ukraine began. Since Russia initiated its invasion on February 24, 2022, the United States has provided the country with around $51.2 billion in military assistance.

The US State Department currently warns Americans not to travel to Ukraine due to the ongoing violence and “active armed conflict.”
“Those choosing to remain in Ukraine should exercise caution due to the potential for military attacks, crime, and civil unrest, and consult the Department’s latest security alerts,” the department stated in its most recent travel recommendation, which was updated on May 22, 2023.
“The security situation in Ukraine remains unpredictable,” it continued. “There are continued reports of Russian forces and their proxies singling out U.S. citizens in Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine for detention, interrogation, or harassment because of their nationality.”
Recently, GreatGameIndia reported that, over the past two years, Ukraine has used a crowdfunded satellite from California-based ICEYE to destroy over 1,500 high-value Russian targets, causing billions of dollars in damages.
