Scotland’s Secret £3 Million Islamic State Island

A controversial cleric, Sheikh Yasser al-Habib, is on a mission to turn a remote Scottish island into his own Islamic state, raising over £3 million for the project. Known for his extremist views and controversial TV channel, al-Habib aims to build a school, hospital, and mosque on the uninhabited Isle of Torsa, off the west coast of Scotland. His plans have alarmed local residents and sparked debate, especially since he intends to implement sharia law and attract Muslims from around the world to this new “homeland.” The ambitious project, which has drawn criticism for its implications on UK sovereignty, highlights the growing concerns about extremist influence and radical agendas.

A fervent cleric facing accusations of inciting hatred has amassed over £3 million to purchase a small British island and establish his own Islamic nation.

According to The Mail on Sunday, Sheikh Yasser al-Habib, 45, and his supporters are in advanced negotiations to purchase the secluded island of Torsa, which is located off the west coast of Scotland. Sheikh Habib sought asylum in Britain 20 years ago after fleeing his native Kuwait.

The extreme scholar, who already manages training camps with a military feel, thinks his group to construct a school, hospital, and mosque on the island so it can implement sharia rules there reports DailyMail.

The preacher adds in a video that followers should pay to help them reach their £3.5 million goal that he will work with the government to grant visas to Muslims “from all over the world” so they can settle in their new “homeland.”

When The Mail revealed his plans to the locals on Sunday, the residents of the nearby island of Luing responded with concern.

One man said: ‘I’ve spent much of my life working in Muslim countries so have no issues whatsoever with that community, but this group do seem alarming from what I’ve just seen now.’

With his ‘global headquarters’ located in the lovely village of Fulmer, South Buckinghamshire, Al-Habib is accused of fomenting sectarian strife between competing Sunni Muslims and Shias in the Arab East and in Britain.

Through his contentious satellite station Fadak TV, which he has operated for several years out of a £2 million church hall conversion, he has been raising money.

Al-Habib, also known as the “Mullah of Fulmer,” has been allowed to carry on broadcasting his lectures despite numerous warnings from the regulator Ofcom, inciting violence and inciting hatred towards Sunni people both domestically and internationally.

The preacher, who only gives sermons in Arabic, has a sizable following among the 400,000 Shias in Britain and millions more worldwide.

His current goal is to create a new “homeland” for his organization, the Mahdi [Messiah] Servants Union (MSU), on the deserted island of Torsa in Argyll.

One of the Slate Islands, Torsa is slightly over a mile long and has a single farmhouse. It hasn’t been permanently inhabited for more than 50 years and is only reachable by private boat from Luing, which is itself reached by ferry from the island of Seil, which is connected to the mainland via a bridge. Two of the group’s officials visited the island and recorded it while being toured around, according to sources who spoke with The MoS.

Since then, Al-Habib has stated on Fadak TV that Torsa, which has two little adjoining islets, is an ‘irreplaceable opportunity’.

He added that Torsa will turn into an Islamic “homeland” that they will establish to get ready for the arrival of their messiah, known as Mahdi, and urged followers to give.

Al-Habib states in a three-minute video that “everything is the Shia homeland if you want to live free under the banner of the imam [Shia leader], in a particular homeland where you feel everything in it reminds you of the expected mahdi…help this project.

In the same video, another man, who is filming from Torsa, says: ‘Here, my brothers, God willing, we want to build a large mosque, a school and a hawza [Shia seminary]. We want this place to be a homeland to the Shias and the believers.’ The video then cuts to shots of al-Habib’s “army,” known as Al-Shurta Al-Khamis, rehearsing and practicing in the Fulmer mosque.

Al-Habib, who was imprisoned for about three months in Kuwait for disparaging the Sunni faith, stated in a different video that the MSU will win the right to allow Shias to move to the island from all over the world.

Sarah Zaaimi, a researcher on al-Habib for the American think tank Atlantic Council and deputy director for communications, stated last night that “people from all over the world will be able to migrate to this homeland,” adding that “they will have their own army, their own justice system, and they will manage their own schools and hospitals.”

‘It does challenge the notion of sovereignty. It’s puzzling to me how the UK authorities are allowing such a discourse. You are fundraising for the creation of a sovereign country on the margins of another country.’

Since moving to the UK in 2004, Al-Habib has been under investigation by the authorities on multiple occasions, and lawmakers have attempted but failed to shut down his TV channel.

A movie penned by al-Habib titled The Lady Of Heaven was removed from Cineworld theaters and some Vue locations in June 2022 following demonstrations by hundreds of Sunni Muslims in places like Sheffield and Birmingham. Since it included the Prophet personally, which Islam forbids, they claimed it to be blasphemous. Despite criticism accusing Cineworld and Vue of “self-censorship,” the movie theater chains halted showing the movie because they were concerned about the safety of their employees.

Al-Habib referred to former Home Secretary Suella Braverman as an “animal” during one of his speeches after she suggested that she would put limits on pro-Gaza demonstrations.

Encouraging supporters to donate, al-Habib said Torsa will become an Islamic ‘homeland’ that they will create to prepare for the coming of their messiah, known as Mahdi.

Following the attacks on October 7, 2018, al-Habib stated in a video broadcast: “Who among us does not enjoy retaliation of the Zionist enemy?” The news cheered us all up. He did, however, condemn Hamas for raping women and desecrating bodies.

In another video, al-Habib calls for the execution of Saudi officials and clergy who are referred to as Wahhabis, a derogatory word for their overlords.

‘If a far-Right group did this, there would be action against it, and so Ofcom should take action against him. It’s now even more absurd that there are paramilitary activities taking place at his premises. I want his channel closed down.’

Former Labour MP for Birmingham Perry Barr Khalid Mahmood declared: “This man should not be allowed to continue attacking people of the Sunni faith with Fadak TV.”

Last month, GreatGameInternational reported that in 2023, nearly 1.8 million pilgrims performed the Hajj, approaching pre-pandemic levels. Indonesia issued the most non-domestic pilgrim visas at 229,000, followed by Pakistan and India. Saudi officials predict over two million pilgrims in 2024.
