Marine veteran David Dutch and firefighter Corey Comperatore were among the victims in the July 13, 2024, Trump rally shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, which left one dead and two injured.

On Saturday night, a father of two was killed and two other men were gravely injured in the Trump rally shooting that shocked the country.
Two veterans of the United States Marine Corps and a longstanding volunteer firefighter are among the victims, all adult men. The Pennsylvania State Police said that all of them were from the Pittsburgh region. According to officials, two seriously injured patients were taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh and were listed as critically ill but stable. One victim passed away at the scene.
Tributes and prayers for the victims and their families were flooding in on Sunday as more information became available. Prominent figures who expressed their condolences included Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey reports The New York Times.
This is the current knowledge we have about the victims.
Corey Comperatore
The governor stated that Corey Comperatore, fifty, was shot in the head and died as a result of covering family members who were with him at the demonstration.
Governor Shapiro declared that Mr. Comperatore “died a hero” on Sunday. “Corey was the very best of us,” he continued.
Mr. Comperatore, a Sarver, Pennsylvania resident and father of two, was an avid fisherman and employee of a plastic manufacturing company. He was a volunteer firefighter for a number of years, leading the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company at one point. He was voted as a potential trustee in 2021 at the adjacent Cabot Church, where he assisted in managing matters such as insurance and church property.
In conversations, he was characterized by friends and neighbors as a “good man,” devoted to his work as a firefighter, his wife, and his two girls.
Mr. Comperatore led the fire company for almost three years, according to Kip Johnston, the current chief. He declared, “He was a great leader.” “You couldn’t meet a more humble guy.”
Matt Achilles, a neighbor, said that Mr. Comperatore had asked him if he knew of anyone who was in need so that he might give them a Christmas ham. He gave one to a mother of five children who was living alone.
David Dutch
David Dutch, 57, of New Kensington, Pennsylvania, has worked for Siemens for many years, according to his sister Jennifer Veri-Grazier. He served in the Marine Corps for a while.
Together with other members of his family, Mr. Dutch has long supported President Trump, according to Ms. Veri-Grazier. Before her brother left on Saturday, she saw a photo of him with sunglasses and a dress shirt with a flag on it. She stated he was “ecstatic.”
He is currently in the hospital, waiting for more surgery, due to liver damage and broken ribs, she claimed.
“He was exercising his rights and went to the rally, and he didn’t deserve any of this,” Ms. Veri-Grazier said.
James Copenhaver
Moon Township, Pennsylvania is home to Mr. Copenhaver, 74. His voter registration was listed as Democratic. His pals say he plays in a band, and is married with at least one son.
Although Larry Wheeler was unaware that Mr. Copenhaver would be attending the rally, he stated that only last week, during their high school years, they had discussed Mr. Trump.
Moon Township supervisor Albert Quaye said he first got to know Mr. Copenhaver a few years back when the latter attended a meeting of the local board of supervisors to voice his worries regarding a development project that was going to take place next to his house. Mr. Quaye stated that he continued to attend meetings after seemingly catching the local politics bug at that time. “He would be there sometimes with us through late-night meetings,” he said.
Mr. Quaye stated that Mr. Copenhaver was retired. Mr. Copenhaver appeared to have worked for the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board in the past, according to his LinkedIn page.
Although Mr. Quaye was unsure of Mr. Copenhaver’s exact condition, he expressed optimism over his prognosis. “Jim’s a healthy 74,” he said.
