A Russian private has claimed he was one of just three soldiers left standing from his 300-man battalion following a failed assault on a small Ukrainian village.
Andrei, not his real name, told his friend Ivan, also not his real name, that he had witnessed his entire battalion being slaughtered while trying to take over Avdiivka, a small town on the outskirts of Donetsk, Ukraine.
“Man, I don't know how I survived. I'm the only one of my group still alive”, he told Ivan, according to Radio Free Europe.
Ivan said the seven minute phone call from Andrei was harrowing: “I never heard such horror in anyone's voice before in my life -- 'My brigade doesn't exist -- it is just gone.'"
