Private security firms have seen a huge surge in demand in recent years, but the recent murder of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, has made things even worse. This tragic event has sparked a new wave of spending on security, with many executives now seeking even more advanced protection.

One company, Fortified Estate, specializes in installing armored doors, bulletproof-glass windows, and other security upgrades for homes. They’ve had their busiest month ever just before the November 2024 US presidential election, as wealthy families were uncertain about what might happen next. The firm’s founder, Jon Harris, noted that the pandemic, the death of George Floyd, and the 2021 Capitol riot all led to a big spike in demand for these kinds of home fortifications.

According to Russell Grey, a director at Security Services International, the installation of bulletproof glass has become very common over the past four years. People are spending millions on high-tech systems, including thermal cameras, anti-drone devices, and sensors to protect everything from art to personal safety. Some are even adding panic rooms to their homes.

The rising sense of insecurity among the super-rich is tied to a growing feeling that the political climate has become unpredictable and dangerous. As Grey said, many of these billionaires believe there could be an assassin lurking around every corner — even though that’s not actually the case. Still, their fears are driving them to spend millions on safety.

The demand for home security surged even more after the murder of Thompson, which occurred outside a hotel in Manhattan. This shocking event stirred up fears that executives were being targeted. Some social media users even posted ‘wanted’ posters, calling for more violence against top business leaders.

For some CEOs, the danger doesn’t just extend to their homes; it’s now extending to their offices. Firms like Bespoke Home & Yacht Security report an increase in demand for fortified rooms at corporate buildings. In fact, many wealthy families are now doubling or tripling their security budgets, according to Matthias Fitzthum, the founder of Bespoke.

Advanced security systems can cost upwards of $1.5 million, but for these billionaires, protecting themselves and their families has become a priority. Whether it’s adding armored doors, thermal cameras, or gas detection systems, the super-rich are going all out to ensure they stay safe in a world that feels increasingly uncertain.
