Ukraine is facing a major setback in its battle for better military support. The much-anticipated delivery of 30 F-16 fighter jets from Belgium has been delayed, and the first jets, which were supposed to arrive by the end of this year, will now likely not be delivered until 2025. This news has come as a disappointment to Ukraine, which had hoped to use these advanced jets in its fight against Russian forces.

In May, Ukraine and Belgium signed an agreement for the delivery of these US-made F-16s. At the time, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky was hopeful that the jets would be ready by the end of 2024. But a new report from Belgium’s Le Soir newspaper has revealed that this timeline is no longer realistic.
Why the Delay?
The main reason for the delay is the lack of trained Ukrainian pilots. The Belgian Defense Ministry recently confirmed that there are not enough Ukrainian pilots ready to operate the F-16s safely. Additionally, the jets are facing technical delays because of shortages of spare parts.
Belgium’s own military plans have also been affected. The country is waiting for a batch of F-35 jets, which are essential for Belgium’s air defense. These jets, made by Lockheed Martin, are taking longer than expected to arrive, which is also affecting the timeline for delivering the F-16s to Ukraine.
The Pilot Training Challenge
Training Ukrainian pilots has become a major hurdle. In August, Zelensky admitted that Ukraine is struggling to train enough pilots to fly the F-16s. This shortage of trained pilots was highlighted by a tragic incident when one of the F-16s that Ukraine had received from its allies crashed during a mission, killing the pilot. This has raised concerns about the speed and safety of pilot training.
Originally, the United States had been training experienced Ukrainian pilots. But after the crash, the U.S. shifted its focus to training younger cadets, which could take longer. Ukrainian pilots are now being trained in several countries, including the U.S., but it’s clear that the timeline for having an operational fleet of F-16s is slipping.
Ukraine’s Struggle to Regain Lost Land
While waiting for the jets, Ukraine is also facing military challenges on the ground. President Zelensky has admitted that Ukraine currently lacks the military strength to reclaim key territories like Crimea and parts of Donbas, which are under Russian control. This is a huge setback, as these regions are crucial to Ukraine’s future, and Zelensky has vowed that Ukraine will never give up on them.
The Ukrainian Constitution prohibits giving up any territory, and Zelensky has made it clear that Ukraine will not accept any peace deal that involves surrendering land to Russia. Instead, he called for diplomatic solutions, hoping that Western allies could pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to enter meaningful negotiations.
What’s Next for Ukraine?
The delay in receiving the F-16 jets is a blow to Ukraine’s air power, but it’s not the end of the road. The country continues to receive military aid from Western allies, including other fighter jets from Denmark, and the training of pilots is ongoing. However, the clock is ticking, and Ukraine will need to strengthen its military capabilities soon if it hopes to make progress in the war.
As the war against Russia continues, Ukraine’s fight for its territories and its military readiness remain key issues. With hopes pinned on diplomatic efforts and continued international support, Ukraine is preparing for the challenges ahead—despite the setbacks.
