India’s First Electronic Warfare Testing Facility

India’s first Electronic Warfare (EW) testing facility is to be setup in Hyderabad by Defence Electronics & Research Laboratory (DLRL), a laboratory of the Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO). DLRL is actively involved in the design and development of integrated Electronic Warfare systems for the Indian Armed Forces.

The proposed test facility will reduce time taken for testing and integration of EW equipment on airborne and naval platforms. Currently testing is done in labs using simulators.

In the 1965 war with Pakistan, DLRL successfully developed and deployed Communication CIPHER equipment and achieved total self-sufficiency in this field. Also the Battle Field Surveillance Radar (BFSR) was successfully developed and produced.

After the Pokhran Nuclear Tests in May 1998 DLRL was included on the list of Indian entities that were subjected to US sanctions.

“Development of indigenous seekers and radars is in highly advanced stage, probably we may not require import (of those equipments) in next few years,” Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister, G Satheesh Reddy said.
